Melissa Butler, Founder Of The Lip Bar, Shares Her Story And A Few Of Her Favorite Things
The Lip Bar Founder Melissa Butler is the first to admit that when she started out in the beauty industry, she was no expert. With a day job as a financial analyst, she was starting from scratch.
“I came from a finance background, so I had no idea what I was doing,” the beauty entrepreneur says. “I went from being on Excel all day to mixing essential oils and carnauba wax in my kitchen.” But she didn’t let the learning curve stop her on her mission to create a brand that championed inclusive beauty.

With this in mind, Butler launched The Lip Bar in 2012, which offers high pigment lip colors for a wide range of skin tones. Since then, Butler’s Detroit based company has made serious waves. We asked her how she keeps up the hustle while also managing to take care of herself.
My power mantra is “Happiness is a choice.” I had to shift my mentality as an entrepreneur years ago, and start to understand that things are going to go wrong and even so, you can always choose happiness and you can always choose to keep going.
